3 Reasons To Solo Travel (Why I Love It!)

“Won’t you be lonely solo traveling?” “Who are you going to talk to?” “Isn’t it more expensive?” “Won’t you get bored alone?” “How do you go out to eat alone?”

These are the questions I get every time I tell people I am taking a solo trip. So many people don’t understand the appeal of solo travel, but for so many of us it can be extremely healing. Here are some reasons I love traveling alone!

1. Relaxation

I am an introvert through and through. I have a social battery that drains very quickly. Even when I’m not traveling, I need alone time to rest and recharge my social battery. When I’m traveling alone, I get constant recharge time. I find real peace and serenity in solitude. Being able to combine the relaxation I feel being alone with experiencing a new place, restaurant, thing, etc is top tier.

I have sat on beaches for full days alone, cruised alone, gone to theme parks alone, and every single time I have found so much peace and relaxation. I think that being in that state of mind from being alone has allowed me to enjoy the places I am visiting significantly more.

2. Freedom

I love spending time with other people, but I think being able to enjoy your own company and be content alone is a life skill.

I don’t always travel alone. I do love traveling with my friends and family. I have never had a bad trip that I took with another person. That being said….

There is something nice about being on your own time and your own schedule. Getting to choose all of the activities, restaurants, hotels, and flights. There is a certain freedom in being able to shape your day to be exactly how you want it. There is no shame if you want to sleep in, or go to bed early, or waste away on a beach all day.

This does also play into solo travel being a skill. You also have to enjoy doing all of those things alone. Personally, I love going out to eat by myself especially when I’m traveling. I also know that isn’t something that everyone could enjoy.

3. Self-confidence

When I took a solo cruise with Virgin Voyages, I did some kind of excursion or adventure every single day we went into port. I did each of them completely alone. Sure, in some of the locations I made some friends along the way and enjoyed their company during excursions; however, the bulk of the time I enjoyed the activities by myself. I never felt bored, I never felt lonely, and I would absolutely do it again.

I’ll be honest, when I first started traveling solo, it WAS scary. Especially the first time I traveled internationally. Being a solo female traveler can be scary, daunting, and get you to a point where you don’t even want to go.

I can tell you, nothing made me feel more confident and independent than conquering a solo international trip. The experience was so incredible and I am so proud of myself for doing it. It really made me realize that there is absolutely nothing that I cannot do.
